After asking a few why's you're able to get to the root of a problem or better understand the reason behind a process. My love of "Why" started early in my career as a Packaging Engineer at Alberto Culver. On my desk were samples of our bottle and competitor bottles. All of the competitor’s bottles where the same height, our bottle was much taller. Why? Why were they the same, and why was ours so different? So I started reverse engineering and found that the shorter bottles weighted less, and stacked more cases per pallet. This simple “Why?” sparked a project resulting in over 1.5million in savings. The Why’s followed me to Carhartt. Why were we doing so much manual data entry? We have computers, why can’t they help with some of this work? This question lead to a love affair with Excel. After learning the basic formulas I had a revelation; you can ‘teach’ Excel to do the work for you using VBA and Macros. So I automated the boring stuff, because why not? Reports were reported faster and data entered itself. Leading Carhartt’s Re-Branding project turned my Why’s into those 2 other priceless “W” words: “What’s next?” and “When?”. We needed a project plan. We asked the Sponsors & Stakeholders “Why” to set the scope. We asked the project team “What’s next?” to create the Work Breakdown Structure. And using MS Project I answered “When?��. But as Mike Tyson says “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth”. So we kept asking questions.
